Colin Farrell: Ondine Changed My Life

Colin Farrell’s movie “Ondine” changed his life. He met his current love Alicja Bachleda and they now have a baby boy together. (Colin also has a six-year-old son, James.) He plays a down on his luck fisherman, Syracuse, who catches a beautiful and mysterious woman in his net that changes his life. We talked about the “new” bleep-free Colin.

JW:  You captured my heart and you broke my heart.

CF:  Mission accomplished.  That was my whole raison d’etre when it came to this film. I want to capture Jeanne’s heart and I want to smash it. Syracuse in “Ondine” is the one character in 12 years of doing a bit of acting that I really didn’t want to walk away from at the end. This guy just – I just loved walking in his shoes.

JW:  Well the love from the movie continues. You and your co-star Alicja are together and have a child together.

CF: Yeah, I’m enjoying Henry immensely.

JW:  Has your other son James met him?

CF:  James has met him – absolutely – oh god, yes.  They’re around each other quite often. James wasn’t too sure at first, but he’s coming around.  I think he knows now that Henry’s here to stay. At first he was kind like, ‘eh, cute – I get it.  Can he go now? And now he’s kind of fond of him.

JW:  So the movie brought you a new love.

CF:  Yeah, it’s strange. One doesn’t really set one’s sights on such magnificent life changes every time one goes to work. So, it was a really rewarding experience. The arrival of Alicja into my life will go down as a pretty life-affecting experience.

JW:  Of course there’s the cliché that the poor guy takes one drink and every thing could go away. Was that hard to play especially after what you’ve lived?

CF:    Oh man, that’s a killer. I’ve seen people in life who’ve lost their lot really fast, haven’t gone back on the jar after a substantial amount of time off, but I didn’t dip into my own personal experience.

JW:  You’ve been so cool about talking about yourself. Are you sick of people asking you about rehab?  Is there going to come a time when people just drop that?

CF:  Hopefully- I mean, look, I had a very distinct and a very defined character that was loud and that came with a lot of energy at one stage.  So for that to be kind of undone, I suppose there has to be a little bit of recognition of some change. But yeah, I’m kind of bored with it. I haven’t had a drink or whatever in five years — my life’s completely different now. Well, a lot of things are still the same. So the change isn’t so spectacular for me and it never is for the person really on the inside — though I am grateful for all the change that’s taken place.
